What Happened
On October 22, 2026, at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America in San Jose, the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) announced four new projects. Agent Skills, contributed by Anthropic, is an open format for packaging instructions, scripts, and resources that agents load on demand. Open Responses, contributed by OpenAI, is an open specification for multi-provider LLM interfaces based on the OpenAI Responses API. OpenEnv, from Hugging Face, is a framework for building reinforcement learning environments. OpenSandbox, from Alibaba, is a general-purpose sandbox platform for running agent workloads.
AAIF now hosts 10 projects, up from three at its launch in December 2025. Existing projects include the Model Context Protocol (MCP), Agent2Agent (A2A), and AGENTS.md. Alibaba's Xiaobin Xu said, "we don't want its future to be defined by a single company."
Three Takeaways for Small Businesses
- Prefer open formats over proprietary glue. When agents, tools, and model interfaces follow shared specifications, switching providers later should mean less rework. This is our reading of the announcement, not a guarantee from AAIF.
- Package your know-how once. Agent Skills is designed so specialized instructions can be reused across platforms. Documenting how your team handles quotes, support, or onboarding is useful whichever tool you adopt.
- Ask vendors which standards they support. Before signing a long contract for an AI tool, ask whether it works with open protocols such as MCP, and how you would export your configuration.
Competing AI companies contributing to the same neutral foundation is a signal that interoperability is becoming a priority. For a small business, the safest move is to build workflows that are not tied to a single vendor.
What to Do This Week
List the AI tools you pay for, note which ones are hard to leave, and write down the processes you want automated in plain language. That documentation becomes the foundation for any agent you build next.
