What Happened

Google is notifying eligible Shopify merchants through Merchant Center that their stores have been matched to their accounts and enrolled in native checkout inside AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app. Per trade-press coverage, eligible U.S. merchants need to take no action to appear, as long as they stay opted in to sell directly, and checkout is active by default for eligible stores.

The checkout runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open-source standard for agentic commerce that Google announced on January 11, 2026. It was co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, and more than 20 partners including Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe have endorsed it. Products must be published on the Shopify storefront and available in Merchant Center, synced through Shopify's Google & YouTube channel or another feed method. We found trade-press reports rather than Google's own documentation, so check details in your Merchant Center account.

Three Things to Do Now

  • Clean up your product feed. Eligibility depends on products being live on your storefront and present in Merchant Center. Accurate titles, prices, and availability matter more when an AI assistant, not a shopper browsing your site, reads them first.
  • Check your opt-in status. Because checkout is on by default for eligible stores, decide deliberately whether you want to sell this way, and confirm the setting in Merchant Center.
  • Protect your own channel. One commentary argues merchants give up some customer relationship and upsell opportunity in exchange for visibility on Google's surfaces. Keep your site, email list, and brand content strong so you are not dependent on one storefront.

AI assistants are becoming a place where purchases are completed, not just researched. Stores with clean product data and a strong direct channel are better placed to benefit without losing control of the customer relationship.

What to Do This Week

Open Merchant Center, review your product data for gaps, and note which of your products you would be comfortable selling through an AI assistant. Then make sure your own website tells the full brand story.
