What Happened

According to Sierra and a summary of the announcement (published 9 October 2026), Meta and Sierra announced the Personal Agent Protocol, nicknamed Poppy, on 6 October 2026 at Sierra Summit. It is an open standard for how a person's AI agent finds a business, signs in with OAuth and completes a task through the company's website, its APIs or its own agent.

On 9 October Sierra published a draft and added 35 design partners, including OpenAI, Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Bank of America and Target. Anthropic is not listed. In the draft, a company publishes one discovery file at /.well-known/poppy.json. Agents start sessions as guests, and customers sign in and choose read-only or write access. Sierra plans design workshops and a reference implementation over the following month, and a v0.1 specification was planned for later in October. Features such as push notifications and a payments extension are listed as ideas, not commitments.

Three Things to Do Now

  • Know what an agent would find. Under the draft, a business decides whether agents use its website, its APIs or its own agent. Today most small businesses have only a website, so make sure it states prices, hours, products and how to order in plain text.
  • Decide what agents may do. Customers would choose read-only or write access. Decide in advance which actions you would allow an agent to take, such as checking stock or booking, and which need a human.
  • Watch the standard, do not rush to build. This is a draft with a v0.1 specification still to come. Fix the basics first and revisit when the specification is published.
Quick Insight

Whatever the final standard looks like, a customer's agent will start from your public pages. A clear, accurate website is the one preparation that pays off under any protocol.

What You Can Do This Week

Open your website as a stranger would. Can you tell what you sell, what it costs and how to order within a minute? List the three questions customers ask most often and make sure the answers are on the site. That is the groundwork any agent standard will build on.
