What Happened
According to a roundup by Hello Growth (October 2026), Microsoft launched a new Copilot on 25 September 2026 with Cowork, Code and Autopilot, which runs agents in the background. Chat and Copilot in Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams stay on the fixed per-user licence, while agentic work is billed by usage in Copilot Credits. The roundup notes that Microsoft does not publish a price per task, so costs are controlled through admin-centre limits, and that new agents are added to your spending policy by default.
Three Things to Check
- Know what is fixed and what is metered. Chat and Copilot in Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams stay on the per-user licence. Agent work is the part billed by usage.
- Set limits before you pilot. With no published price per task, admin-centre limits are the main way to control cost. Start with a small pilot group.
- Review the default spending policy. New agents are added to your spending policy by default, so confirm that setting rather than assuming it.
Usage-based pricing rewards teams that decide in advance which tasks an agent should handle. Without that decision, spend is hard to predict.
What You Can Do This Week
If you use Microsoft 365, open your admin centre, check the Copilot usage limits and spending policy, and pick one small task and one owner for a pilot. Keep your public website, enquiry forms and customer-facing workflows clear and documented, so any agent you add has a well-defined job.
