What Happened
On October 21, 2026, Walmart CEO John Furner announced an Agent Gateway at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco. It is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that lets approved AI agents search Walmart's online inventory and make purchases for their users, covering Walmart and Sam's Club. Walmart says customers can shop their usual brands without sharing personal information or purchase history directly with the agent.
Next month, Walmart will add Agent Profiles: each agent gets its own profile in the customer's account so its purchases appear separately. Customers can require approval for every transaction or pre-approve purchases up to a limit, and can delete a profile at any time. Walmart's terms say agents cannot act beyond the shopper's intent, cannot access payment information, and can see only the information a task needs. Non-compliant agents will be blocked. Meanwhile, Amazon has begun blocking AI agents from buying on shoppers' behalf, and some travel and booking sites have locked agents out entirely. The report gives no sales or usage figures.
Three Takeaways for Small Sellers
- Agent access is now a channel decision. Big retailers are split between welcoming agents with guardrails and blocking them. Decide deliberately where you want agents to be able to buy your products, rather than defaulting into either.
- Clean, structured product data is the entry ticket. Agents search inventory by reading it. Accurate titles, prices, sizes, and availability make your products easier for an agent to find and compare. This is our analysis, not a stated requirement.
- Own the customer relationship. Walmart's design keeps shopper data away from the agent, and Amazon's approach keeps agents out. Either way, your website, email list, and brand content are the assets no platform policy can change.
Agentic shopping is arriving through retailer-by-retailer rules, not one standard. Sellers with clean product data and a strong direct channel can adapt to whichever way each platform goes.
What to Do This Week
Audit your top ten products for complete titles, prices, and stock status, and confirm your own site presents them clearly. Then list which marketplaces you sell on and check each one's current policy on AI agents.
