What Happened

On October 21, 2026, Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet, a standalone proactive AI agent aimed at professionals and small business owners with too much to track. It is built on Opus 5.5 and described as Anthropic's answer to Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots: instead of waiting for a prompt, it reaches out first.

Duet sends a short morning brief on important items from connected apps, checks those apps every few hours, and alerts you when something needs attention. Reported examples include finding missed Gmail and Slack messages, checking QuickBooks or Stripe for unpaid invoices, and preparing payroll in Gusto. While working on its own, it asks for approval before actions such as sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, or deleting a file. Access is by waitlist, limited to Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, and Duet uses existing Claude plan limits with no separate price listed.

Three Things Small Businesses Can Prepare

  • Know which tools an agent would need to read. Proactive agents work from connected apps such as email, chat, and accounting. List which of your systems hold invoices, orders, and customer messages, and keep them organised. This is our suggestion, not part of Anthropic's announcement.
  • Decide your approval rules in advance. Duet asks before sending, paying, signing, or deleting. Decide which of those actions you would always review yourself, and who in your team holds that authority.
  • Make your public information easy for software to read. As agents act on behalf of owners and customers, clear product pages, prices, and contact details on your own website are easier for any assistant to rely on.
Bottom line

Proactive agents shift the work from asking AI questions to reviewing what it flags. Businesses with organised data and clear approval rules will be best placed to use them, whichever agent they choose.

This Week's Step

Write down where your invoices, customer messages, and orders live, and note which actions you would never want an agent to take without your approval. Then check that your website states your products, prices, and contact details clearly.
