What Happened

According to Constellation Research (8 October 2026), Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent, a single agent for work that takes objectives rather than step-by-step instructions. It plans work, uses tools, connects to enterprise systems and can run multi-step processes that last hours. Tasks can be assigned directly, scheduled or triggered by events.

The agent works inside Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Chat and Calendar), Microsoft 365, Slack and third-party applications. It routes between Google's Gemini models and Anthropic's Claude. It can also create sub-agents, each with a defined role, an identity and its own email. It is in private beta, with general availability expected around late October or early November 2026. Pricing is consumption-based, and Google says the exact model will be announced later.

Three Questions to Ask

  • Which job does the agent own? The Gemini agent can run tasks that last hours across several apps. That is useful only if you decide in advance what it should handle. Start with one repeatable task and one person who owns the result.
  • What is the spending cap? Pricing is consumption-based and the details are still to come. Google says admins can set real-time spending caps at project level, with individual caps due in the coming weeks. Set a cap before you pilot, not after the first bill.
  • What can the agent see and do? Agents get their own identities, and Google lists permissions, auditing and policy controls. Give each agent access only to what its job needs, and review what it did.
Quick Insight

A universal agent is only as useful as the task you give it. Teams that write down the job, the owner and the limit get predictable results. Teams that skip that step get unpredictable spend.

What You Can Do This Week

You do not need to wait for general availability to prepare. List three repetitive tasks in your business, pick one, and write down its steps, its owner and a monthly budget. Keep your website, enquiry forms and customer-facing workflows clear and documented, so any agent you add later has a well-defined job.
