A New Trust Layer for Agentic Commerce

Ant International, Visa, and Mastercard announced on September 9, 2026 that they're collaborating on a Know-Your-Agent (KYA) interoperability framework. Each company had already built its own way to verify AI agents: Visa has its Trusted Agent Protocol, Mastercard has Verifiable Intent, and Ant International has its Agentic Mobile Protocol. Instead of leaving businesses to support three separate standards, the three networks are now working toward common principles that any card network, digital wallet, agent platform, or marketplace can rely on.

The goal of KYA is straightforward: establish requirements and accountability for AI agents, verify their identity, and ensure a transaction an agent initiates on a customer's behalf can be executed securely and trusted by every party in the chain.

Why This Matters Now, Not Later

AI agents are shifting from making product recommendations to completing purchases directly. That shift is not a fringe use case: agents are projected to orchestrate between $3 trillion and $5 trillion of global consumer commerce by 2030. When three of the largest payment networks agree to interoperate on agent identity, it is a signal that agentic commerce is being built as real infrastructure now, not treated as a future hypothetical.

What Actually Changes

  • Common trust signals. An agent verified under one network's KYA-aligned protocol can be recognized across the others, while each network keeps its own risk controls.
  • Less duplicated integration work. Businesses and platforms no longer need to build and maintain separate agent identity verification for every card network or wallet they support.
  • Faster, cheaper rollout. Lower integration complexity means faster time-to-market and lower cost for any business launching agent-facing commerce features.
The Bottom Line

Three competing payment giants agreeing to interoperate on agent identity is a stronger signal than any single company's product launch. It tells businesses that customers transacting through AI agents, rather than typing into a checkout form themselves, is infrastructure being built for right now.

What Businesses Should Do Now

You don't need to build your own agent protocol to get ready. What matters is whether an AI agent, and the payment network verifying it, can actually understand and transact with your business: clean, structured product data and catalogs; checkout and purchasing flows exposed through robust APIs rather than buried in a UI built only for humans; and clear identity and trust signals on your storefront or app. Businesses that get this foundation right now will be the ones agents can transact with confidently as KYA-aligned verification rolls out across networks.
