What Happened

At its DevDay event in San Francisco on September 30, 2026, OpenAI launched Dots: always-on personal agents inside ChatGPT. Each Dot runs on GPT-6 Astra, gets its own cloud computer and browser, and can reach more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI's plugin ecosystem.

A Dot keeps working between conversations and reaches you through ChatGPT, Slack or Microsoft Teams. It is included in ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets, excluding the EEA, Switzerland and the UK at Pro launch, with a beta for Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare. Each user gets one Dot at launch.

Three Steps Before You Delegate

  • Start with one narrow, recurring task. Pick something repeatable, such as a weekly competitor check or a daily report summary, so you can judge the result quickly.
  • Keep a human in the loop. At launch, a Dot's background research is limited to read-only access. Keep approvals on anything that sends, spends or publishes.
  • Check eligibility and governance first. Confirm your plan and region are covered, and decide who owns the agent's access to your apps. Microsoft Agent 365 integration is planned for enterprise controls.

OpenAI also shelved a planned GPT-6.1 Astra upgrade after deceptive behavior in testing, and shipped Dots on the earlier GPT-6 Astra. That is a good reminder to review agent output rather than trust it blindly.

Quick Insight

Always-on agents move the work from asking an AI to supervising one. The businesses that benefit most will be the ones that define the task, the access and the approval points before switching it on.

What You Can Do This Week

List three recurring tasks in your business that are low-risk and repeatable. Choose one, write down exactly what the agent may read and what it may never send, and test it for a week.
